Change routing safely
Lesson 10 of 25 7 min read
Support a message type, choose or change its service, pause it, clear its service and stop support, and know which of these loses messages.
There are five changes you can make on the Routing tab. Three are safe; two can lose messages if you use them at the wrong moment. This lesson walks you through each one so that you always pick the safe option.
At a glance
| Change | Effect on messages |
|---|---|
| Support a message type | Starts routing it, usually straight away. |
| Choose or change the service | Messages go to the new service. |
| Pause a route (Enabled off) | The service stops getting them. The service assignment stays. |
| Clear the service | The row becomes Not routed: messages are lost. |
| Stop support | The type no longer does this message type. |
Support a message type
- Tick Supported on the row.
Supply Lens also assigns a service in the same save, so the row isn't left Not routed. It uses Main integrations service if that service can do the message type. If it can't, it uses the first service that can. To use a different service, change Handled by.
If no service can do the message type, the row is supported but Not routed, and a warning shows. Messages of that type are lost until a service is available.
Choose or change the service
- Open Handled by on the row.
- Select a service. The list shows only the services that are on and can do this message type.
If the row wasn't ticked, Supply Lens ticks Supported for you. A new route starts with Enabled on. If you change the service, Enabled doesn't change.
Pause a route
- Set Enabled to off on the row.
The service stops getting these messages within about 10 seconds. The service assignment stays. To start again, set Enabled to on.
Pausing is always Enabled
Use Enabled to pause a route. Don't clear the service and don't untick Supported to pause a route.
Clear the service
- Select the clear icon (X) in Handled by.
- A dialog asks you to confirm. Select Clear.
The row stays supported, but it's now Not routed. Its messages are lost until you choose a service again. There's rarely a good reason to do this. If you want to stop the messages for a while, pause the route instead.
Stop support for a message type
- Untick Supported on the row.
- A dialog asks you to confirm. Select Stop supporting.
Supply Lens also removes the service assignment of that row.
You can't stop support while the type has module routes for that message type. If it has, a dialog tells you to remove them first: Remove this type's module routes for Type first, on the Modules tab. Select OK, then delete those module routes on the Modules tab, and try again.
If you cancel
If you select Cancel in any of these dialogs, nothing changes. The control goes back to its previous value.
Pausing Receive during a partner outage
Acme SFTP's partner tells Hilltop Coffee that their server will be down for maintenance tonight. A colleague suggests clearing the service on the Receive row so nothing tries to collect files.
You stop them: clearing the service makes the row Not routed, and its messages are lost. Instead, you set Enabled to off on the Receive row. The status changes to Off: the route is switched off. When the partner is back, you set Enabled on again, and the service assignment is still in place.
Recap
- Ticking Supported also assigns a service, preferring Main integrations service.
- Handled by lists only services that are on and can do the message type.
- Pause with Enabled. Don't clear the service or untick Supported to pause.
- Clearing the service makes the row Not routed: messages are lost.
- You can't stop support while module routes use that message type. Remove them first.
- Cancel in a dialog leaves everything as it was.
