How should delivery details appear?

Lesson 14 of 24 8 min read

Decide how delivery names and addresses are written, whether addresses are saved to the customer, and how delivery methods are chosen.

Couriers and warehouse teams read the delivery name, address and method on every sales order. Get them wrong and parcels go to "Acme Ltd" with no person's name, or ship by the wrong service. This lesson covers how names and addresses are built, when they are saved back to the customer, and how the delivery method is chosen. Delivery contacts have their own lesson in the advanced module.

Decision 1: whose name goes on the delivery?

Orders often carry both a company name and a person's name. These settings choose which wins.

prioritiseNameForDeliveryNameWhen true, the person's ship-to name is preferred over the company name for the delivery name.
prioritiseNameForAddressNameWhen true, the person's name is preferred over the company name for the contact name on the address.
deliveryNameCombineCompanyNameAndNameWhen true, company and person are combined into one delivery name, by default as Company, F.A.O. Name.
deliveryNameCombinationStringCustomises the combined format. {0} is the company and {1} is the person. Defaults to {0}, F.A.O. {1}.

Consumer orders: prefer the person's name. Business deliveries: combine them, so the courier has both the company and who it is for.

Decision 2: which addresses go where?

useShipToAddressAsPhysicalAddressCopies the order's ship-to address into the sales order's Physical Address fields.
useCustomerAddressAsPostalAddressCopies the customer's billing or account address into the sales order's Postal Address fields.
saveAddressSaves the delivery address back to the customer record in Unleashed, but only when the order has a delivery name.
storeShipmentInformationInCommentsWrites the ship-to name and company into the comments, so they can be read back if the order is later imported from Unleashed.
deliveryNameIdentifierRegexA pattern that extracts a location identifier from the delivery name. Unset means no extraction. An implementer's setting.

Use saveAddress when customers usually ship to one place, such as cafés. Avoid it for gift-heavy consumer channels, where each order's address is a one-off.

Decision 3: which delivery method?

shippingLineDeliveryMethodMapMaps the order's shipping line, for example its carrier or method name, to an Unleashed delivery method. The usual choice for web shops.
deliveryMethodTagMapMaps order tags to a delivery method, with a fallback default. Use it when the method depends on a tag rather than the shipping line.
localPickupDeliveryMethodNameThe delivery method to use when a shipping line is identified as local pickup, such as Collect in store.
copyWarehouseCodeToDeliveryMethodWrites the order's warehouse code into the delivery method field.
copyWarehouseCodeFilterWith copyWarehouseCodeToDeliveryMethod on, copies only the warehouse codes in this list. An empty list copies all.

Name delivery methods exactly

Delivery methods you map to should already exist in Unleashed, spelled exactly as they appear there. Collect your list during planning.

Hilltop's delivery rules

Shopify consumers often order gifts, so Priya turns on prioritiseNameForDeliveryName and leaves saveAddress off. Café deliveries should show the café and the manager, so café customers' orders use deliveryNameCombineCompanyNameAndName. Hilltop offers Standard, Next Day and Collect from Roastery in Shopify, so she maps the first two in shippingLineDeliveryMethodMap and sets localPickupDeliveryMethodName to Collection, the delivery method Hilltop uses in Unleashed.

Recap

  • Choose whether the person, the company, or both form the delivery name.
  • Copy ship-to and customer addresses into Physical and Postal fields if your team uses them.
  • saveAddress suits customers who ship to one place; avoid it for gift orders.
  • Map shipping lines or tags to delivery methods that exist in Unleashed; handle local pickup separately.
