Despatch advice, pick and warehouse order settings

Lesson 9 of 22 7 min read

Settings that keep despatch advices consistent with the original order, and that control how pallets, cartons and catch weights are reported on EDI pick messages.

The despatch advice (ASN) is the message retailers are strictest about. Their goods-in team uses it to plan the delivery, so a code or quantity that doesn't line up with the original order can mean a rejected delivery. This lesson covers the settings that keep the despatch advice consistent, then the warehouse-side Pick and Warehouse Order messages.

Despatch advice (Shipment)

Decision: should despatch lines use the retailer's original product codes?

alwaysMatchOriginalOrderProductCodesWhen on, the product codes from the original order are always used to match despatch lines, instead of matching by other identifiers. Keeps the despatch advice consistent with what the retailer ordered.
edifact.productIdentifierPriorityThe order in which identifier types are tried for EDIFACT messages, for example gtin then supplier-code.

Retailers match the despatch advice back to their own purchase order. If they ordered by their own code and you reply with a GTIN, their system may not recognise the line. Turning on alwaysMatchOriginalOrderProductCodes means you answer in the same terms they asked in.

Decision: what pack size applies if the order didn't say?

defaultOriginalOrderingSizeThe ordering unit size to assume when the original order didn't specify one. Used when calculating quantities on despatch lines.

Why ordering size matters

Retailers often order in cases or outers, while your ERP may despatch in units. Supply Lens converts quantities back into the unit the order was placed in. If the order didn't state a size, this default fills the gap so 48 units can be reported as, say, 4 cases of 12.

Pick messages

Pick messages report what has been picked, broken down by container. Retailers that care about pallet and carton structure (and those trading weighed products) need these settings.

outerContainerUnitOfMeasureIdThe unit of measure that represents the outer container, such as a pallet. Defaults to Pallet ISO 1 if not set.
innerContainerUnitOfMeasureIdThe unit of measure that represents the inner container, such as a carton. Defaults to Carton if not set.
chepPalletUnitOfMeasureIdThe unit of measure that identifies a CHEP pallet. Containers in this unit are reported with the trading partner's CHEP packaging code rather than the default ISO pallet code. Leave unset if all your pallets are ISO.
sendCatchWeightQuantityWhether to report each line's total weight in kilograms alongside the quantity. Required by partners trading catch weight products. Off by default.

CHEP pallets are pooled, hired pallets (usually blue) that are tracked separately from standard ISO pallets. Catch weight products are sold by actual weight rather than a fixed count, such as cheese wheels or joints of meat, so the weight has to travel with the quantity.

Warehouse orders

overrideReceiverIdentifierOverrides the receiver identifier in the message envelope for warehouse order messages, when the warehouse expects a different receiver ID from the one on the incoming message.

Northfield Pantry's pallets

Greenway's Leeds depot only accepts CHEP pallets and checks the packaging code on every pick message. Northfield has a Unit of Measure for CHEP pallets in Supply Lens, so the Supply Lens team points chepPalletUnitOfMeasureId at it. Pallets in that unit are now reported with Greenway's CHEP code. Bristol still takes ISO pallets, which keep the default code.

Later, Northfield starts supplying a cheese board range sold by weight. The team turns on sendCatchWeightQuantity so each line carries its total kilograms.

Recap

  • alwaysMatchOriginalOrderProductCodes makes despatch lines use the codes the retailer ordered with.
  • defaultOriginalOrderingSize supplies a pack size when the original order didn't state one.
  • Pick messages report outer containers (default Pallet ISO 1) and inner containers (default Carton).
  • chepPalletUnitOfMeasureId reports CHEP pallets with the partner's CHEP code; sendCatchWeightQuantity adds kilograms for catch weight goods.
  • overrideReceiverIdentifier on warehouse orders changes the receiver ID in the envelope.
