How do I add a new product to Supply Lens?
Add a Product
Create a Product with its name, default unit, tax code, fulfilment Location and main codes, ready for orders to match against it.
About 4 min
At the end of this guide you will have a Product in Supply Lens that incoming orders can be matched to, with the defaults Supply Lens uses when an order leaves something out.
Before you start
- If you want to choose a default unit of measure, add your units first. See Add Units of Measure.
- If you want to choose a default fulfilment Location, the Location must already exist. See Add a Location.
- Have your SKU and barcodes to hand, exactly as they appear in your ERP or inventory system.
- Adding lots of Products? Use Import Products in bulk instead.
Steps
- Open Settings → Reference data → Products.
- Click + ADD in the top-right to open the Add new product window.
- Enter the Name. It is the only mandatory field.
- Fill in any other fields you have to hand (see the table below).
- Finish with one of the two buttons:
- CREATE saves the Product and closes the window. You can edit it later.
- CREATE AND EDIT saves the Product and opens the Edit Product screen, where you can add prices, more identifiers and conversions straight away.
| Name | The Product's name. Mandatory. |
|---|---|
| Description | A longer description of the Product. |
| Default unit of measure | The size the Product is sold in by default. An order line that arrives without a unit of measure is treated as this unit size. |
| Tax code | Used when an order arrives without tax information. |
| Default fulfillment location | The Location the Product ships from if no Location is provided. The Location must already exist. |
| SKU | Your stock keeping unit code, as it appears in your ERP or inventory system. |
| GTIN-13 | The 13-digit barcode, usually for the single consumer unit. |
| GTIN-14 | The 14-digit barcode, usually for the case or outer. |
Watch out
Enter the SKU exactly as your item master holds it, including capitals, hyphens and leading zeros.
HT-HOUSE-250 and ht-house-250 can be treated as different codes.
Check it worked
- The Product appears in the list on Settings → Reference data → Products. Search for it by name, or filter the list by its SKU or barcode.
- You can also press / anywhere in Supply Lens and type at least three characters of the name or SKU. Products show their SKU in the search results.
- On the next Document that names this Product, its line shows a green tick.
If something goes wrong
- The Location or unit you want isn't in the drop-down. It hasn't been added yet. Add it, then edit the Product.
- Orders still fail with "a product with this Id or code does not exist". The code on the order doesn't match the Product's codes. See Fix: product does not exist.
- A partner uses its own code for this Product. Add it as an identifier. See Add a partner product code.
